Dennis Schröder is a professional NBA player of German descent who currently plays for Oklahoma City Thunder as a point guard. He started his professional career in 2010 with the SG Braunschweig. At the end of the 2012/2013 season, he decided to participate in the NBA Draft and was voted 17th overall by the Atlanta Hawks. In July 2018 he was transferred to Oklahoma City Thunder.

Bio/Early Career

Schroder was born on September 15, 1993, in Braunschweig, Germany. His first love was actually not basketball, but skateboarding. He discovered his love for basketball at the age of eleven and decided to develop it further and make something worthwhile out of it, and interestingly enough, he did. Today he is considered one of the most talented basketball players in Germany.

The young German started playing basketball professionally in 2010 at the age of seventeen with the SG Braunschweig (feeder team of the Phantoms Braunschweig). In his first season with the team, he averaged 1.6 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 7.8 points per game. The following season he made a big breakthrough, in twenty-three regular-season games he averaged 6.7 assists and 17.8 points per game. His team later entered the playoffs, where he averaged 5.1 assists and 18.8 points in just four games.

In the same season, Schröder also played a total of thirty games for the Phantoms Braunschweig of the German Basketball Bundesliga, where he averaged 0.8 rebounds, 0.7 assists, and 2.3 points in about eight minutes per game. In the 2012/2013 season, after a total of 32 games for the Phantoms Braunschweig and an average of 2.5 rebounds, 12 points, and 3.2 assists per game, he was named best German junior player of the year and improved player of the year in the Bundesliga.

In 2013 Dennis Schröder was selected for the World Select Team at the 2013 Nike Hoop Summit where he led the team to a 112:98 victory after eighteen points, two rebounds, and six assists. In the same year, he declared for the NBA Draft.

He was voted 17th overall by the Atlanta Hawks in the 2013 NBA Draft and would start the season with the team as second point guard behind Jeff Teague. In December he played for the Bakersfield Jam of the NBA Development League. By the end of his rookie season, he had played a total of forty-nine games for the Hawks, scoring 3.7 points per game.

The following season, he scored a career-high of 22 points in a game against the Dallas Mavericks. He also took part in the Rising Stars Challenge, where he contributed to the team’s 121-112 victory over Team USA with 13 points and a high of 9 assists and 3 steals. Because of his outstanding performance, he was named the young Tony Parker by ESPN analysts.

In 2016, he signed a four-year contract extension with the franchise company worth $70 million and took over the leadership of the team after Teague was sold to Indiana Pacers. His first game thereafter was against the Cleveland Cavaliers, where he scored a career-high of twenty-eight points. In his next game, he had another career-high of 31 points.

In March 2018, Dennis Schröder set a new career record of 41 points in a game against Utah Jazz that ended in a 99-94 win. In July he was transferred to Oklahoma City Thunder in a 3-team deal between the Hawks and the Philadelphia 76ers.

Dennis has also played for the German U-18 national team as well as for their U-20 national team. He was part of the team that represented the country in the 2012 FIBA European Under-20 Championship, where the team finished fifth. He made his first appearance with the German senior national team in 2014 in a match against Finland. He has also played twice for EuroBasket (2015 and 2017).

After the death of his father, he started to take basketball seriously. His agent is Ademola Okulaja, who once played for the German national basketball team.
