Born as Catherine Louise Sagal on January 19, 1954, in Los Angeles, California; Katey was born as the son of Ukrainian Jewish father Boris Sagal and his wife Sara Gemini. Interestingly, her mother was a singer, but she died of heart disease in 1975, while her father, who worked as a film director, died six years later in 1981. He is said to have died during the shooting of the series titled World War III. The young Katey Sagal grew up with her four siblings in Brentwood, Los Angeles. There she completed her basic training and then enrolled at the California Institute of the Arts, where she studied singing and acting.

After graduating, Katey made her acting debut in 1971 when she played the role of the patient in The Failing of Raymond. Later she played smaller roles in other movies such as Larry, The Dream Makers, Columbo, and The Bold Ones: The New Doctors until 1975. Sagal got her first big role in the series called Mary. The young actress worked as a newspaper columnist alongside Mary Tyler Moore from 1985 to 1986. She then joined the cast of the 1985 sitcom Married…with Children, in which she played the recurring role of Peggy Bundy until 1997.
