Elise Marie Stefanik was born on July 2, 1984, as the daughter of New York-born Melanie Stefanik and Ken Stefanik. Elise grew up in Albany, New York, where she attended the Albany Academy for Girls. After graduating, she went to Harvard University, where she received a Bachelor of Arts in Government in 2006. During her time at Harvard, Elise was actively involved in school policy, which earned her a Women’s Leadership Award for her outstanding leadership skills.

Political Career

Soon after graduating from Harvard, Elise Stefanik began her political career during the term of President Bush. At that time she worked as a staff member of the Council on Domestic Policy. She then worked in the office of the White House Chief of Staff and as Communications Director for the Foreign Policy Initiative. During the 2012 U.S. presidential election, Elise served as political director for Tim Pawlenty, who was the 39th Minnesota governor. She also led the preparation of Paul Ryan’s debate for the same election. After Ryan’s election defeat, Elise returned to New York State to take care of her family’s plywood business at the Guilderland Center.

In 2014, Elise declared her interest in representing the 21st Congressional District of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives. She succeeded Bill Owens, who held this office from 2009 to 2012. Elise triumphed over Matt Doheny in the Republican primary and later won the main election.
