David Conrad Bio

The American actor was born on August 17, 1967, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Conrad is the last of three children (all boys) of the engineer James Watson Conrad and his beautiful librarian wife Margaret Clement Conrad.

He is the great-grandson of the well-known electrical engineer Frank Conrad. David grew up on the Edgewood border and attended Swissvale High School before moving to Kiski School – an all-boys preparatory school in Saltsburg, Pennsylvania.

He graduated high school in 1985 and went to Brown University, where he studied history and was an actor for a while before leaving school to work as a carpenter, then as a house painter and barista, and even interviewing steelworkers for a historical society in Pittsburgh. David Conrad later returned to study, this time studying theater at the prestigious Juilliard School in New York and being a member of Group 25 of the Drama Division from 1992-1996.

During his time at the Juilliard School, he participated in several stage productions, including the stage adaptation of The Cider House Rules (a novel by John Irving). Conard left Juilliard before his senior year to take a role in the film Snow White in the Black Forest, which also starred Sigourney Weaver. David Conrad’s feature film debut was actually a small part of a 1994 film Under Heat. In 1996 he got a role as Leo Roth in the television series Relativity. By the time he got that role, he was signed up for a Pittsburgh production of Tom Stoppard’s play Arcadia, but because the producers thought he was the right person for the role, the shooting of the series was postponed to accommodate his stage work.

In 1998 he played the lead role in the drama-thriller movie Return to Paradise, alongside Anne Heche and Vince Vaughn. After the film, he returned to the stage and made his first Broadway debut in Terence Rattigan’s The Deep Blue Sea, where he portrayed the younger lover of Blythe Danner. He later appeared in off-Broadway productions of Tom Stoppard’s Indian Ink, Richard II, and Troilus and Cressida. His most recent stage production is Pale in Burn This, which was performed at the New Hazlett Theater in Pittsburgh in 2009.

In 1999 David Conrad starred in the television drama The Weekend alongside Brooke Shields and Gena Rowlands, and in the same year, he appeared in A Season for Miracles, originally broadcast on CBS. The experienced actor then played alongside Cuba Gooding, Jr. and Robert De Niro in Men of Honor (2000). Between 1999 and 2002 he played a recurring role in the WB series Roswell and from 2000 to 2005 in the Boston Public drama series by Fox. Conrad was Woody Allen in the comedy Anything Else (2003) and Detective Ed Exley in Fox’s adaptation of “L.A. Confidential”.

David then starred in NBC’s Miss Match, just before the series was canceled after the eleventh episode. In 2005, he appeared in Wedding Crashers with Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn; the same year he got a regular lead role in CBS’ Ghost Whisperer, in which he played Jim Clancy (Jennifer Love Hewitt’s paramedic husband). In 2010, the Pittsburgh-born actor appeared in an episode of CSI: Miami, and in 2013 he began playing the recurring role of Ian Quinn in the first season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

The Hollywood actor played the role of a gardener who had a gay affair in which he shot a tasteful nude scene in Under Heat. Despite his composure and calmness in the film, coupled with the fact that he is not married and is rarely seen with a woman, the actor has still not come out as gay.
