There is hardly any argument that Bishard Baker, popularly known as Budda Baker, is one of the most talented defensive backfields in the NFL. The Cardinals’ safety was born as Bishard Baker on January 10, 1996, in Bellevue, Washington, where he also attended high school. His first name was replaced by Budda, a name that his mother, Michelle Baker, began calling him when he was a baby. Michelle, with whom Budda has always had a special connection, thought that he looked more like a Buddha doll and decided to give him an appropriate nickname – Budda.

Budda grew up with five siblings, four sisters, and an older brother Robert, who died of gunshot wounds on April 22, 2018, at the age of 29. His biological father was not present in his early years, but there was a stepfather who served as a father figure.

At Bellevue High School, he set a high standard in sports. Budda played as a safety, running back, and return specialist on a team that won three consecutive 3A State Championships. He was also a speedster on the track, while his performance in the long jump dropped many chins. For his achievements, Budda was named Seattle Times High School Athlete of the Year in his last season. Among other honorary awards, he was rated a four-star recruit by various platforms. In addition, he was among the best security guards in the 2014 class and was eventually recruited by the University of Washington to play security.

In his freshman campaign, Budda Baker reenacted his explosive career again, but this time on a higher podium. He became a starter and remained so throughout his three-year college career. Budda recorded 80 tackles, one interception, and one sack, after which he was named Freshman All-American by USA Today at the end of his freshman season. He continued his impressive streak, started all but one game due to a concussion, and finished his second year of college with 49 tackles and two interceptions. In return, he was named All-Pac-12 before the next season and All-American of the preseason.

Budda was a natural safety, but in 2016 he moved closer to the line of scrimmage where he shot slightly off the edge. After the season, he earned the NCAA’s All-American honor, which came about by consensus of the NCAA after he was voted first and second All-American team by a number of publications. He also led the Huskies with 71 tackles in total and 10 tackles for defeat. After his junior year, he decided to give up his senior season and enter the 2017 NFL Draft.
