He was born on July 27, 1986, as DeMarre LaEdrick Carroll in Birmingham, Alabama. He is of African-American descent and has American citizenship. Carroll began showing interest and attraction for the game of basketball at a very young age. He attended John Carroll Catholic High School in Birmingham, where he played for the school team. He led the team to the state titles of the class 6A in Alabama. He was truly an outstanding player on the team, with an average score of 17.8 points in his junior year and 19.7 points and 10.7 rebounds in his senior years. Carroll earned great recognition from the All-State, All-Region, All-District, and All-Metro platforms, as well as the title of MVP of the 2004 Alabama Class 6A State Tournament.

Carroll played for the Vanderbilt University basketball team for two years. He had decided to transfer from the team to Missouri. DeMarre moved to Missouri in 2006 where he played for his uncle Mike Anderson and led his team to great successes. The NBA player was nicknamed the “Junkyard Dog” in Missouri after leading the team to the national quarterfinals at the 2009 NCAA Men’s Men’s Basketball Tournament.

He was selected by the Memphis Grizzlys in the 2009 NBA Draft as 27th overall. The following year, Demarre was assigned to the Dakota Wizards but was called back to the Grizzlys in January 2011. His next assignment was at the Houston Rockets, where he was transferred to trade. After that, Demarre played for the Denver Nuggets for a year, playing four games during that time. After he was released from the Nuggets in February 2012, he immediately signed with Utah Jazz, where he played for a year. In August 2013, Carroll signed with the Atlanta Hawks, where he played two seasons and made some really impressive records.

His next step was Toronto Raptors, where he signed a $60 million four-year contract in 2015. After starting with the Raptors in October 2015, he suffered a knee injury on December 7 of the same year and missed several subsequent games.
