Hill was born on December 20, 1983, in Los Angeles, California, as the middle child of three children of Sharon Lyn (née Chalkin) and Richard Feldstein as Jonah Hill Feldstein. His parents, originally from New York, found work in Hollywood and decided to raise their children there. They lived in the affluent neighborhood of Cheviot Hills because Hill attended the Brentwood School. He later moved to the Crossroads School before graduating in 2002.

For his college education, Jonah Hill moved to New York where he attended Bard College before joining the New School and then the University of Colorado at Boulder. During this time, Hill began writing his own plays, which he was occasionally allowed to perform. His big breakthrough, however, came through his friendship with the children of multiple Golden Globe and Oscar winner Dustin Hoffman.
