Zachary Brendan McGowan was born on May 5, 1980, in New York City. His mother Brenda McGowan is of Russian Jewish descent, his father Vincent McGowan is of Irish descent, while his pedigree is rooted in Ireland. His mother worked as an employee of United States Airlines, which meant that the McGowan family was constantly on the move. Zach grew up with his two older brothers Matt and Doug McGowan.

Although the role was intended for an actor of English descent, Zach improvised an English accent during his audition, which helped him get the part. He then joined the cast of the CW science fiction television series “The 100” in which he played King Roan of the Ice Nation. Zach also played the villain “The Superior” in the ABC television series “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”. Zach is currently part of the television series “LA’s Finest”, which is based on the Bad Boys’ film franchise.
