Nemanja Matic is a Serbian footballer who plays in the English Premier League for Manchester United and for the Serbian national team. Before moving to Manchester, he played for other top clubs such as Benfica and Chelsea FC. Here you can find facts about the defensive midfielder.
Nemanja Matic Biography
The Serbian left-back was born on 1 August 1988 in the West Serbian town of Sebac in former Yugoslavia. Of Macedonian descent, whose parents survived the Second World War, he grew up in Serbia.
The club footballer began playing with his brother at a very young age. He inherited his sporting skills from his parents, which his brother also made use of.
When he started playing football, he was an attacking midfielder, and it was his father who was the first and earliest coach. However, like anyone who seriously wants to play at a professional level, young Matic had to find a youth club and so he left home before he was ten years old.
Wife and Family
As mentioned above, the defensive midfielder has a brother, Uroš Matic, who was born on 23 May 1990. Just like his older brother, the younger Matic is a footballer who plays for FC Copenhagen in Denmark as a midfielder.
Both brothers were raised by their parents: Dragan Matic (father) and Biljana Matic (mother). Their roots are in what is now Macedonia, where their maternal grandparents came from. The success of Nemanja and Uros as footballers may be linked to their father, who was also a footballer when he was young.
Just as he has done so much for his professional life, Nemanja Matic has done so for his private life, and he has a beautiful wife, Aleksandra Pavic, to prove it. Pavic, like the footballer, is also from Serbia, and they have been together since they were young.
In 2010, they decided to make the pact for life, and since then they have remained a very close and beautiful couple. Their union has been blessed with two children: a son Filip, whom he enrolled at the Manchester United Academy, and a daughter, Tea.
Club Football Career
Matic started his youth career in 1993 at Vrelo and from there he moved to Obrenovac 1905 in 1997, his next step was to the Red Star Belgrade in 2000, then Partizan in 2004 and finally Jedinstvo Ub in the same year.
He started his senior club career in 2005 with Kolubara and moved to Košice in 2009. From here Chelsea signed him. Interestingly, he remains the most expensive player ever to leave the club, with a signing fee estimated at over $6 million. Middlesbrough was another club interested in signing the midfielder at the time.
After just two games at Chelsea, Matic was sent on loan to Vitesse and from there he was signed by Benfica in 2011, prompting David Luiz to move to Stamford Bridge. After winning the Primeira Liga and Taça da Liga with the club and scoring 99 games and 9 goals, Chelsea returned to sign him in 2014.
With his second move to Chelsea, which lasted until 2017 when he joined Manchester United, the Serbian star had won two English Premier League titles and an FA Cup. By the end of the 2017/2018 season, he had already played 49 games for Manchester, scoring 2 goals in the process.
International Football Career
For his home country, Matic made his first appearance in Serbian jerseys in 2008 when he played for the Serbian U-21 team. In 2008 he moved to the senior national team and by the time he was invited to the 2018 FIFA World Cup, he had already played 38 international matches and scored 2 goals for the Serbian national team.
