A lot has changed since the young church girl Jessica Simpson decided to pursue a career as an actress. Her transition from a gospel artist to a pop star, her successful albums, and her success as a reality TV star is a clear indication of what a successful businesswoman Jessica Simpson is. It has been quite a journey for the American multi-talented icon, much more than a married woman with children to look after. In this article, we will take a look at Simpson’s love life, her friends, her husband/wives, and her family.
Who is Jessica Simpson?
Jessica Ann Simpson was born as the first child of Joseph Simpson and Tina Ann Drew on July 10, 1980, in Abilene, Texas, United States of America. Her father, a Baptist minister, and psychologist, and her mother, a hairdresser, had another child named Ashlee Simpson in addition to Jessica. Her parents, now divorced since 2013, married in 1978, and her younger sister Ashlee is also a singer/songwriter and actress.
Because of the nature of the work Joseph Simpson did for the church, Jessica and the rest of her family moved around the country a lot. She attended Amelia Middle School in Cincinnati, Ohio. When her family moved back to Texas, Jessica attended J.J. Pearce High School and eventually dropped out so she could focus more on her singing career.
Jessica Simpson realized her vision of becoming a singer when she was only 11 years old. At that time she sang in the church choir. The genre of her song at her young age was largely influenced by the nature and type of home Jessica was born in, a Christian home.
The year before she became a teenager, she auditioned for the Mickey Mouse Club, where she sang Amazing grace and danced Ice Ice Baby. Jessica went through various stages and won all the rounds she competed in, then became one of six semi-finalists who competed against superstars such as Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and Justin Timberlake. The talent search became more interesting as the performances of the other contestants were outstanding, but Jessica was unable to continue in the show after she claimed she had suffered a nervous breakdown after Christina Aguilera’s performance. After she failed attempt to get into the Mickey Mouse Club, she returned to singing in the church choir. During a service in her church, a gospel label director, who was also a guest speaker, noticed her singing talent when she sang an a cappella version of Amazing Grace. He asked for an audition and the young Jessica sang Whitney Houston’s I Will Always Love You and he quickly signed her to his record company.
Jessica soon began auditioning at various events and sent her unreleased album Jessica to various labels and producers. Her numerous auditions eventually caught the eye of Tommy Mottola, the head of Columbia Records, who was married to Mariah Carey at the time. In July 1997 she signed with Columbia Records. When she signed with the new label, Jessica named her father as her manager and her mother as her stylist.
On September 28, 1999, Jessica Simpson released her debut single, I Wanna Love You Forever. It reached #3 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts and also went platinum for sales. Her debut album, Sweet Kisses, was released on November 23rd, and in the same year she gave up her debut single. The album happened to be a success, selling over 65,000 copies in the first week of its release and also made it to number 25 on the Billboard 200 charts, selling 4 million copies worldwide, including 2 million copies in the United States.
In May 2001, Jessica Simpson released her second studio album entitled Irresistible. The album didn’t get as many ratings as her first album, although it sold 127,000 copies in the first week after its release, which was almost twice as much as the sales of her first album in the first week after its release. Irresistible was at number six on the Billboard 200 charts. She could only be satisfied with a gold confirmation for the sale and sold a total of 500,000 copies.
In 2012 Jessica released a single called Sweetest Sin, which expressed her marriage to Nick Lackey and her deflowering. The single did not generate many listeners. Her father and her manager then suggested MTV play the newlyweds on a reality show. MTV bought the idea of the reality show and premiered as Newlyweds on August 19, 2003: Nick and Jessica. The show played a major role in the promotion of Simpson’s third studio album, and the album has since been considered their most successful to date. It sold more than 7 million copies worldwide after receiving triple platinum certification.
Jessica has received two “People’s Choice Awards”, a BMI Award, and seven “Teen Choice Awards”.
