Killam attended the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts. After graduating from high school, he decided to study at the University of California, Los Angeles, which he did but never got a college degree, as he only spent one year at the school in 2000.

Taran Killam was only an adolescent when he made his acting debut. He made his first movie appearance in 1994, when he was only 12 years old, in the movie Naked Gun 33?: The Last Insult. His debut role in this film did not bring him much recognition, and he did not get as many leading roles in films as he did at that time.

However, he had to wait until the year 2000 to get the recognition that he longed for when the Amanda show premiered.
