She was born as a biological male with the name Robert Arquette in Los Angeles, California. As Alexis grew up, she always tended and felt drawn to the female side of life and preferred to spend more time with girls than boys. She also tended to the performing arts and took part in small plays. She made her first appearance on television in 1982 as a character in the music video She’s a Beauty by The Tubes. She made her debut on the big screen in 1986 in Down and Out in Beverly Hills. Before that, she appeared as a female impersonator under the name “Eva destruction”.

Arquette soon announced her intention to undergo sex-change surgery to change her gender from male to female. This was followed by the announcement that she had started the process. Her next popular film was the Last Exit to Brooklyn (1990), in which she played “Georgette”, a transsexual. Alexis later appeared in several independent films. She was most popular for Wedding Singer (1998), Pulp Fiction, and Threesome (1994), where she played a gay student.

She starred in over 40 films, many of which were low-budget films. Another notable role that Arquette played was that of a crack addict in the film Jumpin’ at the Boneyard. She also played the lead role in the comedy Killer Drag Queens on Dope.

In the early 2000s, Arquette starred in The Movie Hero, Lords of Dogtown, and many other movies. In 2005, she appeared as a celebrity guest on the sixth season of the reality show The Surreal Life. Arquette began living with HIV in 1987 when she became infected with the disease. While living with the disease, she suffered from various forms of health problems resulting from her condition, but this did not stop her from wanting to change her sex from male to female. She stuck to this decision until 2004 when she announced it to the public.

After explaining her intentions, Arquette reached her transition in 2006, when she was in her late 30s. After her transition, she became an activist and passionate supporter of transgender people.

In her final years, Arquette suffered from many complications resulting from her HIV-positive status. At some point she began to identify herself as a man and later as a woman, admitting at one point that she was sexually suspect. Alexis died on September 11, 2016, after being placed in a medically induced coma. Reports after her death confirmed that she died of cardiac arrest due to her HIV status.
