On one side of the coin, Colin Kaepernick is a story of resistance and the fight for justice, while on the other side it is a story of contempt for the American flag and the victims of the military. Either way, he is a story that will always be told.
The man who has become a massive source of inspiration for many is a soccer player who played in the National Football League (NFL) for the San Francisco 49ers before becoming a free agent in 2016 without any team wanting to sign him after he went down on his knees against blacks during the National Anthem in protest against police brutality.
Colin Kaepernick’s Biography
Colin Rand Kaepernick was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on November 3, 1987, the son of Heidi Russo. At that time his birth mother was only 19 years old and as soon as his father learned that Heidi was pregnant, he dropped a picture of himself and left. Because she wanted him to have a good life, Russo gave him up for adoption when he was only six weeks old, even after her parents agreed to support her with the child. He was then adopted by the Kaepernicks.
He grew up with two older siblings, Kyle and Devon Kaepernick, in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, before moving to California. As the only biracial child in a white family growing up in a white-dominated area, there was the curious look and questions that were asked, but his family always loved him and gave him all the support he needed.
For his education, Collin went to John H. Pitman High School, and after graduation, he received a scholarship to the University of Nevada, Reno.
Growing up, Colin Kaepernick was an athletic child who had football as his first love. Nevertheless, he played and excelled in sports such as basketball and baseball. In fact, he represented his high school in all three sports and was allowed to continue playing soccer and baseball when he went to college.
Professional Career And Controversial Protest
Interestingly, before he made it to the NFL, Colin Kaepernick was selected by the Chicago Cubs in the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft. However, because he wanted to play soccer, he decided not to join the MLB and continued to play soccer in school. After a very successful college career, during which he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, he graduated in 2010 and was selected by the San Francisco 49ers for the 2011 NFL Draft. The quarterback played for the San Francisco 49ers until 2016 when he became a free player.
Because there were many cases of police brutality and he described the oppression of blacks and minorities, Colin Kaepernick decided not to run for the national anthem. He declared that he would not be proud of the flag of a country that oppresses minorities and he would not look away.
Soon other players in the NFL knelt before him during the National Anthem, including Eric Reid, which led to what was arguably one of the largest sports-political debates in the United States and attracted criticism from President Donald Trump.
While there were many who criticized Kaepernick, there were also many people who stood with him across racial lines. Unfortunately for him and Eric Reid, no team in the NFL was willing to sign them because of what was perceived as a highly polarizing protest. For people who did not want to shy away from injustice, Kaepernick and Eric Reid dragged the NFL into court, claiming that they had colluded against them to avoid being hired in the league.
Even as the NFL tried to distance itself from Colin, Nike added a whole new chapter to the story by using the former 49ers quarterback in a 30th-anniversary advertising campaign, first published with a picture of Colin with the caption “Believe in something even if it means sacrificing everything.
Parents, Does He Have A Wife Or Girlfriend?
Among the most important people in Colin’s life are his mother Teresa Kaepernick and his father Rick Kaepernick. Although his biological mother, Heidi Russo, did not play a role in his upbringing, she has always kept an eye on him since childhood, but the two of them have no relationship and have never met. However, nothing is known about his biological father.
Until he is married, Colin has a girlfriend, Nessa Diab, and it is interesting to know that he is an activist, but also his girlfriend, Nessa Diab. Nessa Diab is seven years older than the soccer player and was born in the United States to immigrant parents from Egypt.
She spent some of her early years in Saudi Arabia alongside her two brothers. She graduated from Berkeley with a BA in Mass Communications and works as a moderator for Hot97.
What is significant about Kaepernick and Nessa Diab is that although the footballer is Christian, his lover is Muslim. This led to the rumor in 2016 that he had converted to Islam, but he came out to deny this claim.
Net Worth And Salary
Prior to his involvement in the Nike campaign, Colin Kaepernick had net assets estimated at approximately $20 million. Before he left the NFL, he had a record deal of $126 million that would see him playing for the 49ers until after 2021. His salary based on the contract he signed in 2014 was $645 thousand.
