Alexa Ellesse Vega was born in Florida on August 27, 1998, as the daughter of her Colombian father Baruch Vega, a fashion photographer, and her American mother Gina Rue, a former model, and lived on a ranch until she moved to California with her family at the age of four. She has six siblings, including half-sisters Greylin James and Margaux Vega, and half-brother Jet James and actresses Makenzie Vega and Krizia Vega.

As a child, she was very sporty and took part in various sports such as cross-country skiing and water polo. She also took dance lessons and is also an experienced gymnast. The following year, 2013, she got engaged in August on a cruise ship to actor and singer Carlos Pena Jr. A few months later, on January 4, 2014, the duo exchanged their vows in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
